05 3D PrintingTECHNOLOGY
In podiatric orthotics, technology moves at a speed that is hard to keep up with. New design, scanning and manufacturing systems, materials, software and processes appear constantly. Trying them all is impossible. Adopting them all would make no sense either.
That is why, after ten years working on innovation applied to podiatry, at Biomech we have learned that developing technology takes more than technical knowledge: it takes judgement.
Research is important. So is testing. But it is just as important to know what is worth offering to the market, what needs more development time and what should simply be dropped.
That is exactly what our work consists of: analysing, developing, testing, comparing and selecting the technologies that can genuinely improve the clinic's work and the patient's treatment.
01 · PMS · PORTABLE MOULD SCAN
PMS digitises phenolic foam impressions in 3D so that their geometry can be incorporated into the design of the orthosis. It lets the clinic keep its own impression-taking procedure and send the information to the laboratory without shipping the physical impression.
Keeping both the physical impression and its digital model makes the work easier to trace and to fit into the clinic's quality procedures.
The digital model also allows measurements to be taken and clinical markers and annotations to be added to accompany the prescription.

02 · BIOMECH SCAN 100
Developed by Biomech in collaboration with the Biomechanics Institute of Valencia —IBV—, Biomech Scan 100 combines laser and cameras to obtain a three-dimensional model directly from the foot.
A solution for clinics that want to build digital capture into their assessment protocol and connect data collection with the design of the orthosis.
We support its adoption with installation and personalised training, to make it easy to use in daily practice.
Capture technology at the service of the podiatrist's assessment and judgement.
03 · IN-HOUSE DESIGN SOFTWARE
Our CAD design software brings together more than ten years of development specific to podiatric orthotics. It lets you turn the podiatrist's prescription into a three-dimensional model and define the geometries, thicknesses and specific elements of each orthosis.
Its evolution comes from the real experience and needs of the clinic: having tools that make design easier, allow every detail to be controlled and widen the possibilities for customisation.
This in-house development is part of a working environment connected to the clinic through our online management system.
The podiatrist defines the treatment. Technology helps give it shape.
04 · CAD/CAM MANUFACTURING
CAM technology converts the three-dimensional design into machining instructions for our numerically controlled milling machines —CNC—. This is how we transfer the designed geometry to the material selected for each treatment.
We work with different materials and combinations of hardness to meet the characteristics set out in the prescription.
Digital manufacturing is completed by adding the necessary elements and finishes and by a final technical review and check by a registered podiatrist before the orthosis leaves the laboratory.
Precision in machining and professional attention down to the last detail.
05 · 3D PRINTING
Today we apply that same judgement to one of the technologies with the greatest capacity to transform orthotic manufacturing: 3D printing.
We don't want to adopt it simply because it is a new technology or because it allows faster manufacturing. We are studying materials, geometries, mechanical behaviour, precision, durability, manufacturing times, costs, customisation possibilities and, above all, how it performs within the treatment.
This research includes materials such as PA11 and flexible TPU and a pilot programme with selected clinics, whose experience helps us evaluate the solutions in their clinical application.
The question is not whether we can make an orthosis by 3D printing. The question is a different one:
Can we offer the podiatrist a solution that genuinely improves on what already exists in quality, agility, design, cost and therapeutic outcome?
That is the standard that will determine how and when we bring this technology into our offering.
We aren't simply looking to do things in a new way. We are looking to do them better.
OUR STANDARD
Technological innovation only makes sense when it is a real improvement on what already exists.
A solution can be faster without being better. It can be newer without being more precise. It can simplify a process and, at the same time, compromise the clinical result.
That is why, before adopting a new tool or process, we always ask ourselves the same questions:
If the answer is not clear enough, we keep researching.
And if a technology does not improve on what already exists, we drop it.
At Biomech we don't adopt technology for novelty: we adopt it when it proves it genuinely improves the clinic's work and the patient's treatment.
